Sahara Group Founder Subrata Roy Passes Away at 75

Subrata Roy Born on June 10, 1948, in Araria, Bihar. Despite facing financial constraints, he demonstrated an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age. After completing his education in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, Roy embarked on a remarkable journey that would lead to the establishment of one of India’s largest business conglomerates.
In 1978, Subrata Roy laid the foundation for Sahara India Pariwar, starting with the Sahara Finance, a small chit fund business. Under Roy’s leadership, the Sahara Group ventured into various sectors, becoming a multi-billion-dollar enterprise. The company played a pivotal role in shaping the financial landscape and became one of the largest employers in India, contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth.
Sahara Group founder, Subrata Roy, passed away at the age of 75 due to a cardiorespiratory arrest at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute in Mumbai. According to a company statement, Roy had been admitted on Sunday after his health deteriorated following an extended battle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.
The statement described Subrata Roy as an “inspirational leader and visionary,” acknowledging his role as a guiding force, mentor, and a source of inspiration for those who had the privilege to work alongside him. The company expressed deep sadness at his demise and stated its commitment to upholding his legacy, continuing to honor his vision in driving the organization forward.
Chetan Upadhyaya, Founder Secretary of the Satya Foundation, shared reflections on Roy’s life, describing him as a highly spiritual person who had started his journey from scratch. The mortal remains were expected to be taken to Lucknow, with the last rites likely to be performed in the coming days.
In his prime, Subrata Roy played a pivotal role in building the Sahara Group into a multi-billion dollar enterprise, making it one of the largest employers in the country. Known for his connections with influential figures in politics and Bollywood, Roy had a profound impact on the business landscape. Tributes have been pouring in from colleagues, politicians, and sportspersons, recognizing his contributions to the business world.
