NCERT Forms Committee for Social Science Syllabi and Teaching-Learning Material

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has constituted a 35-member committee to develop syllabi and teaching-learning material for History, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and Psychology for classes 6 to 12. The committee, known as the Curricular Area Group (CAG): Social Science, is chaired by Michel Danino, a visiting professor at IIT-Gandhinagar.
This committee is formed in continuation of the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), which was notified in July. NSTC was tasked with finalizing the curriculum, textbooks, and learning materials for classes 6 to 12. The CAG for Social Science will coordinate with other subject domains to ensure continuity, interdisciplinary connections, and integration of cross-cutting themes.
The timeline for submitting Handbooks for Teachers to NSTC and NCERT is set for February 25, 2024. The committee’s work is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and the curriculum revision aims to align with the new policy’s objectives and principles.
The members of the committee include experts from various fields, such as Sanjeev Sanyal (Economic Advisory Council), Banabina Brahma (Kokrajhar Government College, Assam), MD Srinivas (Centre for Policy Studies, Chennai), and others. The committee’s formation is part of the broader effort to revise the school curriculum to meet the requirements of NEP 2020 and enhance the quality of education in India.
