In the fourth meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc, leaders deliberated on the prospect of projecting Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge as the Prime Ministerial candidate for the Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal endorsed Kharge for the PM face, emphasizing the need for a united opposition against PM Modi. However, Kharge rejected the proposal, emphasizing the priority of winning elections collectively.
While Mamata Banerjee suggested that projecting a Dalit PM would be beneficial for the alliance, Kharge declined the idea during the meeting. Congress leader PJ Joseph clarified that Mamata did not explicitly propose Kharge’s name but hinted at the potential of a Dalit PM. Kharge, known for his commitment to equality and service to the poor, emphasized the importance of focusing on victory and increasing the alliance’s parliamentary strength.
The proposal faced resistance from JD(U) and RJD leaders Nitish Kumar and Lalu Yadav, who left the meeting early without attending the press conference. The INDIA bloc aims to accelerate seat-sharing talks and reach an understanding by the year-end. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Congress urged Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Kharge to contest the Lok Sabha 2024 elections from the state, emphasizing the political significance of Uttar Pradesh.
As the opposition leaders navigate discussions on a potential PM face and seat-sharing arrangements, the political landscape in India is evolving, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral contest in 2024.
