Indian Diaspora Contributes Significantly to Global Progress, Says Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh

January 24, 2024 Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh highlighted the pivotal role played by the Indian diaspora in driving global economic growth. Speaking at a ceremony in New Delhi to announce the results of the first Vaishvik Bharatiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) Fellowship calls, he emphasized that the Indian diaspora, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM), adds value to the countries where they are settled while maintaining strong ties with their homeland.

Dr Jitendra Singh stated that the diaspora, deeply rooted in Indian culture, is now being beckoned by the opportunities and ease of work in present-day India. He quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words, “Hamara toh khoon ka rishta hai, passport ka nahi” (Our connection is of blood, not of passport), underlining the profound and complex relationship with the over 34 million People of Indian Origin and Non-Resident Indians abroad.

The Minister highlighted the significance of the VAIBHAV Fellowship, which aims to engage diaspora members in STEM fields from top institutes worldwide in collaborative research with Indian institutions. The fellowship is expected to contribute to India’s research capabilities and align with the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary DST, stressed the need for strengthening scientific areas in India, such as Renewable Energy, Cyber Physical Systems, Quantum Technologies, and Affordable Healthcare. He emphasized that the Indian diaspora could offer valuable perspectives and knowledge to enhance India’s research and innovation landscape.

The VAIBHAV Fellowship Program, implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), received 302 applications, leading to the selection of 22 VAIBHAV Fellows and 2 Distinguished VAIBHAV Fellows. The program encourages collaboration between Indian and international researchers to address global challenges and foster innovation.
