Zoho’s Innovative Rainwater Management: CEO Sridhar Vembu’s Tweet Sparks Interest

In a bid to combat water scarcity and promote sustainable practices, Zoho Corporation‘s CEO, Sridhar Vembu, took to Twitter on November 20, 2023, to highlight the company’s unique approach to water conservation. Vembu’s tweet shed light on the water storage ponds situated on Zoho’s Guduvanchery campus, emphasizing their role in capturing and storing rainwater. In a lighthearted touch, Vembu hinted at his own excitement to swim in the ponds soon, accompanied by an emoji.

With temperatures soaring in the city, the allure of diving into the sprawling pond, spread across 1.5 acres, is sure to attract more employees to embrace this sustainable initiative.

Initiated two years ago, the Pond Project at Zoho’s Estancia campus has yielded impressive results, particularly evident following last year’s November rains and Cyclone Michaung. According to Praval Singh, Vice President of Marketing and Customer Experience at Zoho Corp, the water level in the pond stood at 13 feet in November, rising to over 18 feet during Cyclone Michaung. Thanks to Zoho’s innovative mechanism, the campus remained free of water logging despite the deluge.

The campus’s design ensures efficient rainwater harvesting, diverting water from terraces and roads to underground storage tanks. Once these tanks are filled, the excess water is directed to the pond. Moreover, provisions for overflow ensure that excess water is safely channeled into the main stormwater drainage system, preventing flooding in the neighborhood.

In addition to the pond, Zoho’s Estancia campus boasts four wells and one borewell. Stored rainwater serves various purposes, including fire hydrants and domestic use after undergoing RO treatment. According to Praval, the stored water can meet the campus’s domestic requirements for up to three to four days, with treated sewage water utilized for chillers and flushing.

Zoho Corporation advocates for integrating rainwater management into infrastructure planning, emphasizing the importance of preventing water wastage and replenishing groundwater tables. By implementing such initiatives, Zoho aims to mitigate the impact of excess rain and contribute to sustainable urban development.

As Zoho continues to lead by example in sustainable practices, their innovative approach to rainwater management sets a precedent for environmentally-conscious corporate initiatives.
