Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma Initiates Bhumi Pujan for 50 MW Solar Project in Assam

Today, the Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, marked a significant milestone in the state’s renewable solar project energy journey by performing the Bhumi Pujan ceremony for a 50 MW Solar Project in Sonitpur district. Developed by SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), a subsidiary of SJVN, the project underscores Assam’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The 50 MW Solar Project, situated in Sitalmari village, Barsola Block, Dhekiajuli Revenue Sector, Sonitpur district, is poised to revolutionize the region’s energy landscape. With an estimated investment of Rs. 291 crores, the project aims to generate 101 million units of green energy in its first year of operation.

Over a span of 25 years, the cumulative energy generation is projected to reach approximately 2,319 million units. The electricity produced will be supplied to the Assam Power Development Corporation Limited at a rate of Rs. 3.92 per unit, contributing to the state’s energy security and sustainability goals.

The Bhumi Pujan ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Ashok Singhal; MP, Tezpur, Shri Pallab Lochan Das; MLA, Barchalla, Shri Ganesh Kumar Limbu; Additional Secretary, Ministry of Power, Shri Ajay Tewari; Director (Finance), SJVN, Shri Akhileshwar Singh; CEO, SGEL, Shri Ajay Singh; and MD, APDCL, Shri Rakesh Kumar. Their presence underscored the collaborative efforts of the government and stakeholders towards promoting renewable energy initiatives in Assam.

Smt. Geeta Kapur, Chairperson & Managing Director of SJVN, highlighted the company’s commitment to renewable energy development in Assam. SGEL, the renewable arm of SJVN, is actively engaged in developing solar projects in the state, including the 70 MW Solar Project in Dhubri, for which the foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on March 4, 2024. This collective effort is part of SJVN’s larger vision to contribute significantly to Assam’s energy transition.

Established in 1988 as a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Himachal Pradesh, SJVN Limited has emerged as a leading player in the energy sector. With a diversified portfolio encompassing hydro, thermal, wind, solar, power trading, and transmission projects, SJVN has commissioned thirteen projects totaling 2377 MW of installed capacity and 123 km of transmission lines.

Looking ahead, SJVN is poised to expand its footprint in the renewable energy space, with ambitious targets of achieving 25,000 MW installed capacity by 2030 and 50,000 MW by 2040. Aligned with the Government of India’s commitment to achieving 50% of its power capacity from non-fossil-fuel-based sources by 2030, SJVN remains steadfast in its mission to drive sustainable growth and development across the country.
