Crime Focus: A Vlogger arrested in Goa for criticizing Mamata Banerjee during a Facebook Live session

Kolkata police team arrested vlogger Roddur Roy of Goa on June 7, Tuesday, on charges of insulting Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee and his nephew, Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, for foul language during a Facebook Live session. In a live broadcast, Roy blamed Banerjee’s management for alleged misconduct at the KK singer’s last concert in Nazrul Mancha. The singer was unconscious, having recently sung in the hall, and was reportedly ‘brought dead’ by a doctor.

The FIR was lodged at the Chitpur police station on June 4, after a complaint was lodged with TMC spokesman RijuDutta. “Roy was arrested this afternoon by our Goa police. He will be brought to Kolkata while he is detained. The police will take him to the local court for custody” said a police officer.

Roy is known for using profanity on social media. His Facebook Live video – with which he was arrested – has been removed from social media by authorities. In addition to the prime minister and his nephew, Roy blamed TMC leaders such as Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim and Madan Mitra, as well as the Kolkata Police Commissioner for the artist’s death. Local media reported that this was not the first complaint about Roy’s content, although it was the first time police had made a complaint.Roy has not spoken to reporters or online since his arrest.

BJP leader Anupam Hazra, responding to the development, wanted to know why the police did not take action against the vlogger actor when he used obscene language in lights such as Rabindra nath Tagore.”Now that the prime minister and Abhishek Banerjee have been harassed, the police have taken action. Why should it? ” he asks.In April 2012, Kolkata police arrested a Jadavpur University professor of chemistry, Ambikesh Mahapatra, for allegedly sending an email containing a prime minister’s cartoon.
