The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will no longer recommend quarantines or trial stay programs in schools or day care centers for people exposed to COVID-19, the agency said Thursday in updated guidance. The agency also said it no longer recommends post-exposure quarantine for unvaccinated people because approximately 95% of the US population has either been vaccinated, already had COVID-19, or both. “These guidelines confirm that the pandemic is not over, but they also help us move to a point where COVID-19 will no longer seriously disrupt our daily lives,” CDC scientist V.
The CDC said it has updated its recommendations that people exposed to COVID-19 should wear a high-quality mask for 10 days and test on the fifth day after exposure, regardless of vaccination status. “Both prior infection and vaccination provide some protection against serious disease, it really makes the most sense not to differentiate our guidelines or our recommendations based on vaccination status at this time,” said Dr. Massetti to reporters. The CDC’s school guidelines also removed the recommendation to keep children in cohorts to reduce the likelihood of exposure to COVID-19.While the agency lifted its testing-and-staying recommendations for schools, it said schools could consider implementing COVID-19 screening for high-risk activities such as close contact sports or during key times of the year.
