Surprisingly Improved Air Quality of Delhi in April 2024

Delhi experienced a notable improvement in air quality during April 2024, recording the maximum number of ‘Good to Moderate’ air quality days in comparison to the last six years, with the exception of the lockdown year 2020 due to COVID-19. This improvement can be attributed to favorable meteorological conditions and the concerted efforts of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas (CAQM) along with various stakeholders to control air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Key Highlights

Number of Good to Moderate Air Quality Days: Delhi witnessed 23 days with ‘Good to Moderate’ air quality in April 2024, compared to 17 days in 2023, 0 in 2022, 18 in 2021, 30 in 2020 (during the lockdown period), 12 in 2019, and 8 in 2018.

Control of Poor to Severe Air Quality Days: The city experienced only 7 days with AQI (Air Quality Index) greater than 200 in April 2024, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This is a significant decrease compared to 13 days in 2023, 30 in 2022, 12 in 2021, 18 in 2019, and 22 in 2018.

Average AQI: The average AQI for Delhi during April 2024 remained in the Moderate AQI category, below 200. It was the second lowest monthly average AQI for April in the last six years, with the daily average AQI being 182 in 2024, 180 in 2023, 255 in 2022, 202 in 2021, 110 in 2020, 211 in 2019, and 222 in 2018.

Reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 Concentrations: There was a significant reduction in the daily average concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 during April 2024 compared to previous years, indicating an improvement in air quality levels.

CAQM’s Role

The Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR is actively collaborating with various stakeholders to implement effective measures for the prevention, control, and abatement of air pollution in the region. By working closely with concerned parties, CAQM aims to continue improving the overall air quality in the National Capital Region.
