The United Nations sounded a stark warning on Tuesday, cautioning that an Israeli assault on Rafah in the Gaza Strip appears to be imminent. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged nations with influence over Israel to intervene and prevent what could be a devastating military operation in the southern Gaza city, where over 1.2 million displaced Palestinians are seeking shelter.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to proceed with the assault, regardless of Hamas’ response to recent proposals aimed at halting the nearly seven-month-long conflict and securing the release of Israeli hostages.
The UN’s aid chief, Martin Griffiths, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The world has been appealing to the Israeli authorities for weeks to spare Rafah, but a ground operation there is on the immediate horizon.” He described the potential assault as a tragedy beyond words.
Israel had pledged to improve aid access to the Gaza Strip following pressure from U.S. President Joe Biden to address the humanitarian crisis. However, Guterres highlighted that the progress made so far cannot justify or prepare for a full-scale military operation in Rafah.
Amidst fears of famine in northern Gaza, where conditions are dire, Guterres stressed the need for increased aid access and security for humanitarian workers. He emphasized that humanitarians, facilities, and the people in need must not be targeted.
The UN’s warnings come amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to discuss measures with Israeli officials to boost aid access, while Guterres urged both Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement to avoid further conflict.
Despite Israel’s claims of increasing aid support, concerns persist over the humanitarian situation in Gaza. The UN continues to advocate for the use of land routes for aid delivery, emphasizing their necessity in addressing the crisis.
The looming threat of an assault on Rafah underscores the urgency of diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and address the humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza.
