Heavy Rains and Snowfall Trigger Landslides and Flash Floods in Jammu and Kashmir

In Jammu and Kashmir, relentless rains and snowfall have unleashed havoc, causing landslides and flash floods across several regions, leading to significant damage to public infrastructure and private property. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway, a crucial lifeline connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country, has been forced to shut down due to multiple landslides, leaving a multitude of vehicles stranded along its route.

Video footage captured the terrifying sight of rocks and debris cascading down mountainsides, crashing onto the highway below. Landslides at Mehar, Gangroo, Mom Passi, and Kishtwari Pather in Ramban district have effectively blocked the highway, disrupting essential transportation services.

With rains persisting in the region, authorities are facing challenges in clearing debris and restoring normalcy along the highway. Commuters have been advised to refrain from traveling on the route until it has been fully cleared and deemed safe for passage.

The adverse weather conditions have also severed connectivity in other parts of the valley, with Kupwara district in north Kashmir experiencing road inundation and several villages being submerged by floodwaters.

Tragically, a 13-year-old boy lost his life in Ramban district when he was struck by a boulder following a landslide. Additionally, in the Boniyar area of Baramulla district, a family of seven sustained injuries after their house collapsed due to landslides.

In response to the ongoing crisis, all schools across Kashmir will remain closed tomorrow as a precautionary measure. Furthermore, the Kashmir University has postponed exams scheduled for the same day in light of the adverse weather conditions, landslides, and flash floods affecting multiple areas.

As authorities work tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the natural disaster and restore normalcy, residents are urged to exercise caution and heed advisories issued by local authorities to ensure their safety during this challenging period.
