The reported entry of a US aircraft carrier, the Carl Vinson, into the South China Sea has raised concerns among experts, who believe it sends the wrong signal to the Philippines amid tensions in the region. The carrier strike group, part of the US Navy, departed Singapore following a port visit and is now operating in the South China Sea.
The move is seen as an attempt by the US to maintain the South China Sea as a contentious issue and to assert its military presence in the region. Experts suggest that such displays of military force, especially during sensitive periods, go against efforts to promote peace and stability.
Chen Xiangmiao, Director of the World Navy Research Center at the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, noted that the US aircraft carrier’s presence exacerbates tensions between China and the Philippines. He expressed concern that the move could encourage the Philippines to take more extreme actions, escalating contradictions with China.
The Philippines has been involved in repeated provocations in the South China Sea, including attempts to reinforce an old warship grounded near Ren’ai Jiao (Ren’ai Reef). The recent accusations by a Philippine military spokesperson against China have further strained relations.
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded by attributing recent tensions to the Philippines’ change of policy, violations of international law, and deliberate infringement of China’s sovereignty. Mao urged the Philippines to return to dialogue and consultation to properly manage the situation at sea.
Military experts emphasize that the Philippines is making a strategic misjudgment by underestimating China’s determination to safeguard its rights and stability in the South China Sea. They advise the Philippines to make independent decisions that align with its national interests rather than relying on the US, which is perceived as treating it as a pawn.
While the US Navy has a history of conducting provocative carrier exercises in the South China Sea, recent activities are seen more as political and diplomatic tools than actual military instruments. Experts highlight the diminished survivability of aircraft carriers in the face of China’s military capabilities. They caution against actions that could escalate tensions in the region and emphasize the need for dialogue and cooperation to maintain stability.
