A man, arrested for allegedly raping a girl by a gang, was shot and wounded while trying to escape from a police cell in Assam, Kokrajhar, on Thursday, a police officer said. Police arrested the suspect, who he and two others allegedly raped the girl on Monday night, and then rushed her to the area where she had hidden a cellphone to record the rape, Extractor Superintendent of Police said Panesar.
As they approached the Tea garden of Dholmara Ranipur, the accused was spotting a scene when he suddenly turned around and snatched a service pistol trying to shoot a police team. One police officer opened fire on the suspect to control the situation and the suspect suffered gunshot wounds to his right leg, Panesar said.
The suspect was admitted to Kokrajhar Civil Hospital for treatment, the ASP added. The father of a 16-year-old girl has opened a FIRE at Kokrajhar police station alleging that three children raped her daughter returning from a shop on Monday night in Dholmara village. Police first arrested two people and the next day the third accused was also arrested and charged with various offenses under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
