Road accidents in India is decrease by 18.46 percent in year 2020 compared to 2019: Data released by Transport Research Wing- MoRTH

The limits of road accidents have shown a significant decrease in 2020 compared to 2019. Accidents overall dropped by an average of 18.46 percent, the death toll dropped by 12.84 percent and the number of injuries dropped by 22.84 percent above last year’s average. A total of 3,66,138 road accidents were reported by the States and Union Territories (UTs) in the 2020 calendar year, killing 1,31,714 lives and causing 3, 48,279 injuries.

According to a report on ‘Road Accidents in India – 2020’, prepared by the Transport Research Wing (TRW) of the Department of Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the number of road accidents has decreased since 2016 with a slight increase of 0.46 percent in 2018. For the second year in a row, the number of people killed in road accidents has dropped by 2020. Similarly, the number of injured has dropped since 2015.

Current volume of road accidents

For the third consecutive year in 2020, people who die in road accidents include young people of productive age. Young people between the ages of 18 and 45 make up 69 percent of the victims by 2020.The current volume of ‘road accidents in India – 2020’ provides information on various aspects of road accidents in the country during the 2020 calendar year. It has ten sections and covers information related to road accidents in the case of road length and number of vehicles. The data / information provided in this report is taken from the National / Regional Police departments compiled during the calendar year in standard formats as provided by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) under Asia Pacific Road Accident Data. (APRAD) is a basic project.

According to the report, there has been a reduction in the number of fatal accidents, that is, accidents involving at least one death. 1,20,806 accidents were reported in 2020, which is 12.23 percent lower than the 2019 figure of 1,37,689. Interestingly, by 2020, National Roads, Provincial Roads and Other Roads have reported fewer accidents, deaths and injuries compared to last year.The major countries that have experienced significant reduction in road accidents by 2020 are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. And the major countries that have achieved significant reduction in road accidents by 2020 are Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.
