December 2, 2023, Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced his opinion on the captaincy debate, asserting that Rohit Sharma should lead the Indian cricket team in all formats once he is available for selection. Ganguly’s endorsement comes amid discussions about Rohit Sharma’s captaincy role, particularly in T20Is, following India’s heartbreak in the final of the ODI World Cup.
Ganguly, the former BCCI president, stated, “Once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India because he has done so well in the World Cup.” Rohit Sharma, a proven leader, is expected to return to the helm for the T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024.
Despite the absence of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav will lead India in the T20Is against South Africa, while KL Rahul will captain the team in the ODIs. The Test series will witness the return of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, with Rohit leading the side in the Tests.
Ganguly emphasized the significance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s T20I setup, stating, “They are absolutely integral and an important part of Indian cricket.” Both players have been on a break from T20Is since the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Reflecting on the break taken by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during the limited-overs matches of the South Africa tour, Ganguly supported their decision. He acknowledged the physical and mental demands of the World Cup, stating, “Very rightfully, they have taken a break because there is so much cricket all the time.”
Looking ahead, Ganguly expressed optimism about Rohit Sharma’s continued captaincy until the T20 World Cup in 2024, emphasizing Rohit’s leadership qualities. “He’s (Rohit) a leader. I expect and presume that he will continue as captain till the T20 World Cup in 2024,” Ganguly concluded.
Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the return of Rohit Sharma, both as a prolific batsman and a seasoned captain, as India gears up for future cricketing challenges.
