The Pulitzer Prize Board on Monday saw Ukrainian journalists “with courage, perseverance and dedication to the truth” about Russia’s invasion of their country, which began on February 24. The January 6, 2021 riots – when a crowd of supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol Building in Washington.
Giving Ukrainian journalists a “special citation”, the award-winning director Marjorie Miller said, “The Pulitzer Prize Board is pleased to give Ukrainian journalists courage, patience and a commitment to true reporting during Vladimir Putin’s brutal invasion of his country and his war of propaganda in Russia. “
“Despite the abduction, bombings and deaths of people in their posts, they have persisted in their efforts to provide an accurate picture of the worst reality, honoring Ukraine and journalists around the world,” he added.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, an estimated seven journalists, including three Ukrainian, have been killed so far, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The Washington Post, which won the Pulitzer Prize for public service journalism, was recognized for its extensive reporting – published in a complex series of complex issues and failures in political and security programs before, during, and after the January 6 riots.”A compulsory and clearly presented account” gave the public “a complete and unambiguous understanding of one of the world’s darkest days,” Miller said.
Most of the news awards were taken by the New York Times – by three. The India Reuters photographer, who was killed while talking about the war in Afghanistan, was part of a team that took Pulitzer to go for a photo shoot. Danish Siddiqui and his colleagues Adnan Abidi, SannaIrshadMattoo, and Amit Dave won with photos showing the escalation of the Covid-19 epidemic in India. Their work, which was removed from the category of broken images by the judges, “balanced the closeness and desolation, while giving viewers a high sense of place,” the committee wrote.
