In a concerning development, Additional Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has disclosed that he’s been receiving threatening calls and death threats from international numbers. Known for his involvement in ordering a videography survey of Varanasi’s Gyanvapi complex in 2022, Judge Diwakar has urged Uttar Pradesh police to investigate the matter thoroughly.
According to reports, Judge Diwakar, in a letter addressed to SSP Sushil Chandrabhan Ghule, expressed deep concern over the malicious calls he has been receiving. The judge’s request for an investigation highlights the gravity of the situation, especially considering the international origin of the threats.
Earlier, similar concerns were raised by Judge Diwakar following the Gyanvapi judgment. Consequently, the Allahabad High Court had sanctioned Y-category security for him and his family. However, this security arrangement was later downgraded to X-category, raising questions about the adequacy of protection provided to the judge.
Presently, Judge Diwakar’s security detail comprises two personnel, a measure deemed inadequate by one of his aides. The concern stems from the lack of weapons possessed by the security personnel to counter potential threats from individuals armed with automatic guns and modern weaponry.
The judge’s safety has been a matter of significant concern, as evidenced by his previous statements regarding the creation of an atmosphere of fear surrounding his civil case involvement. The safety of his family has been a recurring source of worry, reflecting the profound impact of the threats on both his personal and professional life.
In a related incident last year, a member of the Popular Front of India (PFI) was arrested near Judge Diwakar’s residence in Lucknow. Subsequently, a gunner was assigned to guard the house of Judge Diwakar’s brother, also serving as an additional district judge. However, the security detail was withdrawn during the Lok Sabha elections, raising further questions about the judge’s safety.
Having recently been transferred to Bareilly, Judge Diwakar continues to face challenges in discharging his duties. His proactive stance in taking suo motu action on the 2018 Bareilly riots case underscores his commitment to upholding the rule of law despite the personal risks involved.
The reported death threats against Judge Diwakar underscore the importance of ensuring the safety and security of judicial officers, whose role in dispensing justice is vital for upholding the principles of democracy and the rule of law. As investigations into the threats unfold, authorities must take swift and decisive action to safeguard the integrity of the judiciary and protect those entrusted with upholding justice.
