Actress Priyanka Chopra has spoken out about the ongoing SAG AFTRA strike and extended her support. Taking to Instagram on Friday night, Priyanka shared a post announcing that she stands with her “unions and colleagues”. Priyanka shared a poster that read “Sag.Aftra Strong.” She wrote: “I stand with my unions and colleagues. In solidarity we build a better tomorrow (red heart and clasped hands emoji). She also added the hashtags – Sag Aftra Strong and Sag Aftra Strike.
Earlier, several reports said that the production of her project Heads Of State will also be halted or delayed due to the strike. Since Priyanka is a member of SAG AFTRA, she will not be able to film for any project until a new agreement is reached between SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP and the strike ends.
Hollywood actors join writers in demonstrations
Hollywood’s hard-hitting actors joined film and TV writers for the first time in 63 years on Friday as they cheered and chanted outside major studios to call for higher streaming pay and restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence. The twin strikes will add to the economic damage caused by the writers’ walkout, which began on May 2, and add to the pressures facing the multibillion-dollar media industry as it grapples with seismic changes to its business.
In New York and Los Angeles, actors marched outside the offices of Netflix Inc, Paramount Global and other companies, demanding higher compensation for working-class actors and more profits. “We have an old contract for a new type of business, and it just doesn’t work for most people,” actress Susan Sarandon said outside the Warner Bros. Discovery offices, as quoted by Reuters.
What AMPTP said
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) said it has offered significant compensation increases to members of SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America (WGA). AMPTP is a group that negotiates on behalf of Netflix, Walt Disney Co and other studios. Reuters sources close to the studios also argue that the companies face challenging times. Many streaming services have yet to make a profit after spending billions of dollars on programming to try to attract customers.
