Piyush Goyal at ICT: People need to have fire in the belly to create something marvelous

Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry said that the next Unicorn from the Textile sector has to come from the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT). The minister was addressing the e-Summit 2022 of the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai through video conference on Sunday. He asked the ICT students to take the leadership in Textile entrepreneurship.

Goyal said that the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) has one of India’s best fibres and hi-tech textile technology department present in the country. The ICT boasts of multiple illustrious alumni like Mukesh Ambani of the Reliance Industries, Indravadan Modi of Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Nilesh Gupta of Lupin Limited and Ashwin Dani of Asian Paints.

The minister said that the eminent alumni of the ICT have played a decisive role in making India self reliant, especially in the sectors of Chemicals and pharmaceuticals. It is inconceivable how just one institute can act as a catalyst in designing and growing an entire sector.

The reputation that the Ivy League colleges hold in the world of technology and management across nations similarly is the reputation of the Institute of Chemical Technology to the Chemicals industry, the minister added. He said that every student of the institute has the responsibility to carry this reputation and legacy forward by rising up to make Aatmanirbhar India.

Goyal said that the most appropriate definition for entrepreneurs is the Nation Builders and Change Makers. He added that the Government of India is acting as a facilitator and has taken multiple metamorphic actions to encourage and stimulate the Textiles sector.

Some of the initiatives by the government include the Performance Linked Initiative (PLI), setting up of seven Mega Textile Parks, launch of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) with the aim to position India as the global leader in the field of Technical Textiles and under the initiative 31 projects have already been approved.

We are making huge leaps in the field of innovation. Research and Development is being seen as a mandatory aspect so as to develop and propel the nation into the new age of growth and development, the minister further added.

Goyal said that within a period of five years of the launching of Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India has become a global leader in the digital transactions arena. The nation has the third largest Startup ecosystem in the world today. In just the last five years, more than 65,000 startups have already registered. The country has, as of today, over 90 Unicorns. These startups have created lakhs of jobs which has further fast tracked the growth of the country, Piyush Goyal added.

Prime Minister Modi has a very strong belief in the power of the youth and so he has trained his entire focus on the startup ecosystem in the country, so as to support and strengthen the innovation, provide opportunities to the young boys and girls, to simplify the processes, handhold them through their journey, provide them with the funds wherever required and the  easing of the regulatory conditions around the startups, help and support in the creation of the development (incubation) centres.

The Atal Tinkering Labs is one of the many such experiments which have returned outstanding results, and so, going forward the partnership and collaboration between the Industry and the academic institutions will surely define the India of tomorrow, Piyush Goyal said.

Goyal said the country wants the businesses to improve their product cycles, create and supply solutions of the future and keep a constant focus on the business process Re-engineering aspects.

Goyal said that today, India is confident and yet unsatisfied and that is a good thing to remain unsatisfied. He contested that satisfied individuals don’t possess the will to transform and are incapable of bringing in the change. Hunger to be better is what is needed for growth. People need to have fire in the belly to be able to do something marvelous, to be able to bring about extraordinary achievements.
