North Korea Claims Spy Satellite Took Photos of US Military Installations

North Korea has declared that its recently launched military spy satellite captured images of key US military installations, including the White House, the Pentagon, and US aircraft carriers at Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia. According to North Korean state media, leader Kim Jong-Un received these images after the satellite’s launch last week. The satellite’s purpose, as stated by Pyongyang, is to monitor military activities conducted by South Korea and the United States.
The international community, including South Korea and the United States, strongly condemned North Korea’s satellite launch, viewing it as a provocative action that poses a threat to regional peace. United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibit North Korea from conducting satellite launches, considering them a disguise for testing long-range missile technology. North Korea argues that it has the sovereign right to launch spy satellites in response to perceived military threats.
Kim Son Gyong, a senior North Korean Foreign Ministry official, criticized the condemnation from the US and others as a “brazen-faced violation of sovereignty.” South Korean officials have confirmed the satellite’s entry into orbit but are still evaluating its functionality.
North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong Un was shown satellite images of a military facility in Guam, a US Pacific territory. Earlier reports suggested that the satellite also captured images of US military bases in Hawaii and key sites in South Korea. Experts remain skeptical about the satellite’s ability to produce high-resolution images but acknowledge its potential military utility for North Korea.
South Korea suspects that Russia provided technological assistance, enabling North Korea to launch the spy satellite. The international community, including South Korea, the US, and Japan, has accused North Korea of seeking advanced Russian technologies in exchange for supporting Russia’s war in Ukraine by shipping conventional arms. Both Russia and North Korea have denied any such weapons transfer deal.
