Governance Focus: NITI Aayog will release the third edition of the India Innovation Index on 21 July 2022

NITI Aayog will release the third edition of the India Innovation Index on 21 July 2022 at an event at NITI Bhawan. The India Innovation Index 2021 will be released by the Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, Shri Suman Bery, in the presence of Dr. V K Saraswata, Member; Shri ParameswaranIyer, CEO and other distinguished dignitaries. The release of the third edition of the index – the first and second editions were launched in October 2019 and January 2021 – confirms the government’s ongoing commitment to transforming the nation into an innovation-driven economy.

The India Innovation Index 2021 takes place against the backdrop of a pandemic that has disrupted the global demographic landscape. Resilience and crisis-driven innovation have helped India bounce back in these tough times. The India Innovation Index 2021, which examines innovation capacity and ecosystems at the sub-national level, highlights recent drivers and catalysts for fostering such crisis-driven innovation. The third edition strengthens the scope of the country’s innovation analysis by drawing on the Global Innovation Index (GII) framework. The new framework presents a more nuanced and comprehensive view of measuring innovation performance in India with the introduction of 66 unique indicators compared to the 36 indicators used in the previous edition (see India Innovation Index 2020). Through this comprehensive framework, the index assesses the innovation performance of all states and union territories in India. States and Union Territories have been divided into 17 “Core States”, 10 “North Eastern and Hill States” and 9 “Union Territories and City States” to effectively compare their performance.

A special section has also been introduced in the India Innovation Index 2021 to present a detailed analysis of the drivers of innovation by assessing the improvement in indicators. States can review their position and the factors that led to the change in their ranking against the India Innovation Index 2020.With the India Innovation Index, NITI Aayog has embarked on a journey to develop a coherent tool for benchmarking the innovation ecosystem of states and union territories, promoting both competitive and cooperative federalism among them.
