Global Focus: Prime Minister Narendra Modi & US President Joe Biden expressed shock over the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have expressed shock at the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. In a joint statement, the leaders of the Quad Security Dialogue, or Quad, stated that Abe was a “transforming leader of” Japan and Japan’s relations with each country. “Highlighting Abe’s constructive role in establishing the Quad alliance, the three leaders said the former Prime Minister had worked tirelessly “to advance the shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

“We, the leaders of Australia, India, and the United States, are shocked by the tragic assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe,” the statement read.”Our hearts go out to the people of Japan – and to Prime Minister Kishida – at this time of tragedy. We will honor the memory of Prime Minister Abe by repeating our work in a peaceful and prosperous environment,” he added.Abe was assassinated on Thursday while campaigning for the upcoming upper house election in the town west of Nara. The suspect was quickly overpowered by security officials present at the scene and placed in custody. In a video broadcast by Japanese broadcaster NHK, security guards were seen jumping over a man wearing a gray shirt lying face down on a paved street.

Complaints and condolences flooded the world after NHK confirmed Abe’s death. U.S. President Joe Biden said he was “shocked, angry and deeply saddened” and conveyed his condolences to Abe’s family. Prime Minister Modi wrote a heartfelt hat to Abe, calling the Japanese leader “the world leader, and a great champion of India-Japan friendship”.“ Japan and the world have lost a good overseer. Also, I have lost a dear friend.
