Ankara has taken a significant stance against Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip, with Turkey announcing the suspension of all trade activities with Israel. The Turkish Trade Ministry cited Israel’s ongoing violence against Palestinians as the primary reason for this decision.
This move follows Turkey’s recent imposition of restrictions on various exports to Israel, which were initiated last month and are set to continue until a ceasefire is achieved in Gaza.
The Trade Ministry emphasized that Ankara had previously restricted the export of 54 product groups to Israel in April due to the relentless violence and humanitarian crisis in Palestine. Despite international efforts to broker a ceasefire, Israel’s aggressive behavior persisted, prompting Turkey to escalate its measures.
The Ministry highlighted the worsening humanitarian situation in Palestine and reiterated its commitment to implementing stringent measures until Israel permits the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
While suspending export and import transactions with Israel, Turkey’s Trade Ministry assured coordination with Palestinian authorities to mitigate any adverse impact on the Palestinian population living under occupation.
Trade between Turkey and Israel amounted to $6.8 billion in 2023, with Turkish exports comprising a significant portion of this total. The latest decision underscores Turkey’s condemnation of Israel’s actions and its firm support for the Palestinian cause.
