A 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of central Mexico

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of central Mexico, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said Monday. The earthquake occurred at 2 a.m. on Monday. According to the NCS, the earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System said there was no tsunami threat for the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia or Alaska following the earthquake.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Union Territory of Ladakh yesterday on Saturday, the seismological department said. No casualties were reported. According to the National Center for Seismology, the tremor was felt at 9:44 pm and its epicenter was 271 km northeast of Leh.

The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the surface at a latitude of 35.74 degrees north latitude and 79.84 degrees east longitude.

Last week, on June 16, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean. The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 280 km (174 mi) southwest of Tonga, at a depth of 167.4 km (104 mi), according to the USGS.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) initially reported a magnitude 7 earthquake near the southern region of the Fiji Islands.

According to the World Economic Forum, countries such as Chile and Japan, which face regular earthquakes, have many regulations to ensure that buildings can best withstand these events.

Chile sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most earthquake-prone regions, and has faced more than a dozen earthquakes of at least magnitude 7 in the past 50 years. But the loss of life has been kept low thanks to the country’s strict building codes.

The rules were updated after the country faced the world’s largest earthquake in 1960. They ensure that buildings are constructed in a way that allows them to sway with seismic waves rather than remain rigid. The Japanese building also has shock absorbers – such as thick rubber blocks that help them stay stable when shaken.
