Syria’s defence ministry reported on Friday that eight soldiers were injured in Israeli airstrikes near Damascus. The strikes occurred on Thursday night, originating from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and targeting a site close to Damascus.
While Israel rarely comments on individual strikes, it has consistently stated its opposition to Iran’s expanding presence in Syria. The Israeli military has conducted numerous airstrikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011, often targeting Syrian army positions and Iran-backed fighters.
The recent escalation in airstrikes follows heightened tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups. Reports indicate that Israel’s strikes have intensified since the onset of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
On April 19, Israeli airstrikes targeted a Syrian army position in the southern part of the country, coinciding with reports of Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Additionally, Iran launched a significant retaliatory attack on April 13, involving drones and missiles, in response to an earlier strike on its consulate in Damascus, which was attributed to Israel.
Syria’s prolonged conflict, which began in March 2011, has resulted in immense human suffering, with over half a million people killed and millions more displaced.
