A new deadline to commit to Mariupol as the West promises Ukraine some arms

Russia has handed over a new Ukrainian military rule to Mariupol on Wednesday as it heads for a decisive victory in its new eastern invasion, with Western governments promising more military aid to Kyiv. Thousands of Russian soldiers are backed by weapons and rockets to advance what Ukrainian officials called the Donbas War.

Russia’s eight-week-long invasion has failed to capture any major Ukrainian city, forcing Moscow to re-focus on various regions.

Major European invasion

A major European invasion since 1945, however, has seen nearly 5 million people fleeing the country and reducing cities to rubble. Russia has bombed the steel industry Azovstal, the largest base left in Mariupol, with bombs exploding, a Ukrainian presidential adviser said on Tuesday night: “The world is watching online child killings and is silent,” adviser MykhailoPodolyak tweeted.

After the previous decision to surrender was over and as midnight approached, the Russian Defense Ministry said that not a single Ukrainian soldier had disarmed and renewed the proposal. Ukrainian commanders have vowed not to give up.

“The Russian military, based on humanitarian policies, also called for a ceasefire from the 1400s in Moscow on April 20 and to lay down its arms,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said. The United States, Canada and Britain said they would send more weapons.

“We will continue to provide them with more ammunition, as we will provide them with additional military assistance,” said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki, adding that new sanctions were being prepared.

US president announces military aid package

U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to announce a new military aid package equivalent to last week’s $ 800 million one in the coming days.U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a four-day suspension of civil war this coming weekend, when Orthodox Christians celebrate Easter, to allow citizens to flee and help people. Russia says it introduced what it calls “special military service” in Feb. 24 to end the war and “insult” Ukraine.

Kyiv and its Western allies reject that as false excuses. Ukraine said the new attack led to the capture of Kreminna, an 18,000-strong administrative center in Luhansk, one of the two provinces of Donbas. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed that “another phase of the project is underway”.

People republics

The Donbas, which produces coal and steel, has been focusing on Russia’s campaign to overthrow Ukraine since 2014, when the Kremlin used proxies to establish divisive “republic’s people” in parts of Luhansk and Donetsk provinces.

Mariupol’s hardest struggle and the worst humanitarian action

In Mariupol, the epicenter of the war and the worst humanitarian catastrophe, about 120 residents living near the Azovstal steel structure have been abandoned by humanitarian corridors, Interfax reported on Tuesday, citing Russian state television. Mariupol has been under siege since the early days of the war. Tens of thousands of residents are stranded without food or water and corpses littered the streets. Ukraine believes more than 20,000 people have died there.

“Deliberately killing civilians, destroying homes and human infrastructure, and using all forms of weapons, including those banned from international conventions, has become the signature of the Russian military.”

Russia has denied using banned weapons or targeting civilians in its attack on Ukraine and has stated, without evidence, that there are signs of atrocities. A video released by the Ukrainian army Azov is intended to show people living under a metal mine, in which they say hundreds of women, children and the elderly are sheltered with diminished material.
