Washington, D.C. — In a historic move, President Joe Biden announced the end of his re-election bid on Sunday, leading to an outpouring of praise from Democratic leaders and calls for his resignation from Republicans. This decision has shifted the political spotlight to Vice President Kamala Harris as the potential Democratic nominee to face Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
Democratic Reactions
Democrats were quick to commend Biden’s legacy and express their support for Harris. Kamala Harris described Biden’s decision as a “selfless and patriotic act,” highlighting his unprecedented achievements. “His accomplishments are unmatched in modern American history, surpassing many two-term presidents,” she said in a statement.
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton thanked Biden for his service. “We join millions of Americans in thanking President Biden for all that he accomplished. Barack Obama, who served alongside Biden, called him a “patriot of the highest order” and acknowledged the uncharted waters ahead. However, he stopped short of directly endorsing Harris.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised Biden as a “patriotic American who has always put our country first,” calling his leadership one of the most consequential in American history.
Hakeem Jeffries, House Minority Leader, and Chuck Schumer, Senate Majority Leader, also lauded Biden’s legislative accomplishments but did not name a preferred successor.

Senator JD Vance, Trump’s pick for running mate, criticized Biden as the worst president in his lifetime. House Speaker Mike Johnson echoed these sentiments, stating that if Biden is not fit to run, he is not fit to serve and must resign immediately.
Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican, accused the Democratic Party of trying to upend the will of the American people in recent primary elections. “We cannot afford four more years of failure,” he said.

First Lady Jill Biden shared her husband’s announcement on social media with a heart emoji.
