In a shocking turn of events, an army officer of major rank reportedly opened fire and detonated grenades among his fellow army personnel, causing injuries to five individuals, including three officers, within a camp situated in Jammu and Kashmir‘s Rajouri district on Thursday.
According to officials, the incident occurred during a shooting drill, and the officer attacked his colleagues without apparent cause and he later barricaded himself in the unit’s armoury and threw grenades at his superiors who attempted to surrender. The tense eight hours before the officer was eventually subdued within the armoury. This incident was at the Neeli post, located near Thanamandi in the district.
For the precautionary measure, army evacuated a nearby village and the official statement claimed that an officer was injured due to a possible grenade mishap in Rajouri. The statement from the White Knight Corps of the army reads, “The White Knight Corps of the army posted on X that one officer was hurt in a probable grenade mishap at a post in Rajouri sector on 05 Oct 23. Officer evacuated and stable post initial treatment. Further investigation of the incident in progress.”
According to sources, a firing drill had been ongoing at the camp for several days leading up to the incident. The accused officer allegedly began firing at his colleagues and subordinates without any discernible motive on Thursday. Subsequently, he locked himself inside the camp’s armoury and launched grenades when the commanding officer, accompanied by his assistant and medical officer, approached the building in an attempt to convince him to surrender.
The sources further reported that all three officers were injured when one of the grenades launched by the accused exploded nearby. The second-in-command were in a “critical” situation and two more soldiers got injuries during the random firing by the accused, who was ultimately subdued at approximately 11 pm.
Regarding the incident, Defence PRO Lt. Col. Suneel Bartwal, based in Jammu, clarified, “I have received calls about some firing/terrorist attack on an army camp in the General Area Rajouri. I would like to inform you that no terrorist attack has occurred; it is an unfortunate internal incident of the camp.”
