Filmmaker Atlee Sets Sights on a Rs 3,000 Crore Film Starring Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan

Renowned filmmaker Atlee, best known for his collaborations with superstars Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan, revealed his ambitious goal during the India Today Conclave. Atlee expressed his desire to direct a blockbuster film that earns a staggering Rs 3,000 crore at the box office while featuring both Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan in pivotal roles.

Atlee’s debut in Hindi cinema with “Jawan,” which amazingly marked his first collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan and he has previously worked with Vijay in Tamil blockbusters namely “Theri,” “Mersal,” and “Bigil.”

When asked to choose between the two mega-stars, Atlee responded, “I would pick both of them,” showcasing his admiration for both actors. He added that he intends to create a film with a budget that can accommodate both Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan, aiming for a colossal Rs 3,000 crore in box office earnings.

“Jawan” was released on 7,September has already grossing highest Indian film of 2023, amassing over Rs 1,000 crore in reported earnings.

During the Conclave session titled ‘Mass appeal: Recipe for scripting a blockbuster,’ Atlee humorously compared his bond with the two stars, saying, “One is like a wife, one is like a mother. I can’t leave either. I have to live with both.”

Atlee acknowledged Vijay’s unwavering support in establishing his position in the film industry, while he expressed his gratitude to Shah Rukh Khan for trusting him with “Jawan.”

He said, “He (Vijay) has given me back-to-back films. Of course, I have delivered hits to him, but he really trusted on me. From there, a man who came with utmost trust… There are so many directors and anybody would have said yes if Mr. Shah Rukh Khan called them to do a film. But he trusted me blindly & I don’t know why he selected me. But that trust has made me do ‘Jawan’ with responsibility and love.”

At 37, Atlee aspires for his films to endure the test of time, stating, “After 100 years also, this dialogue should connect the audience in the right way. My film should stand for 100 years.”

Regarding “Jawan,” Atlee believes the film has cracked the formula to entice audiences back to theaters, especially in the post-COVID-19 era. He expressed his joy at this achievement, remarking, “I think ‘Jawan’ has cracked it. I’m super happy about it. That’s my success more than the Rs 1,000 crore.”

Atlee’s transition from romantic comedies to action films has earned him the moniker of ‘South Indian Karan Johar.’ He credited Karan Johar for encouraging him to venture into Hindi cinema, marking it as a significant milestone in his career.
