Key Updates on Sikkim Flash Floods:
Stranded Individuals: According to state chief secretary Vijay Bhushan Pathak, approximately 3,000 people are stranded in Lachen and Lachung. Among these, about 700-800 are drivers, and 3,150 people who traveled to the area on motorcycles are also among those stranded. The government has initiated helicopter evacuations conducted by the Army and Air Force to rescue these individuals. Families of the stranded have been able to communicate with their loved ones through voiceover internet calls, facilitated by the Army.
Rescue Operations: So far, rescue teams have successfully evacuated 2,011 people, while approximately 3,000 tourists, including foreigners, continue to remain stranded in the state. The calamity has affected nearly 22,034 people, as reported by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA).
Evacuation Plans: The government is planning to airlift stranded tourists to Mangan and subsequently transport them to Sikkim via road. However, the rescue operations have been hampered by disrupted connectivity, extensive damage to infrastructure, and adverse weather conditions.
Restoration Efforts: Efforts to restore essential services such as water and electricity in Singtam town, one of the worst-hit areas, have been completed. Data shows that approximately 277 houses, both makeshift and concrete structures, have been destroyed across the four affected districts of Singtam, Mangan, Namchi, and Gangtok.
