IMD: Orange alert in state capital due to rainy weather

The weather station at Safdarjung, representative of Delhi, recorded only 0.8 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). However, Palam and Ayanagar recorded light showers and hailstorms, receiving 30.4 mm and 39.6 mm respectively during the same time period.

Gurugram, meanwhile, recorded 48 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours till 8:30 am on Sunday, according to IMD officials in Chandigarh. Some parts of the city received rain in the afternoon and evening, areas like Sirhaul toll plaza also witnessed hailstorm, but the IMD recorded only traces of rain after 8.30 am.

IMD reported:

Despite rain and hail being reported near the Indira Gandhi International Airport, officials said flight operations were not affected. The intensity of rain is expected to increase on Monday, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for the capital – the Met department issuing a yellow alert to warn the public about the weather phenomenon, which will be upgraded to an orange alert for weather activity. requires the general public to be “ready”.

IMD scientist Kuldeep Srivastava said there is a chance that most of Delhi will experience rain on Monday, while the city is also expected to witness gusty winds of up to 40 kmph along with hail in some areas.

Srivastava said, “This western disturbance will intensify on Monday with more chances of covering the entire capital with storm clouds, cyclonic circulation that is forming in the area, leading to the formation of storm clouds. These are localized spells that bring intense showers in a small window accompanied by hail”.

The rain led to the capital recording a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius (°C) – three degrees below normal and the second day in a row that daily highs were below normal after Saturday’s 25.3°C.

Meanwhile, the minimum was 15.4°C — one degree below normal and almost three degrees below the 18.2°C recorded on Saturday.

Several areas in Gurugram witnessed waterlogging for the second consecutive day, with Narsinghpur, Pataudi Road and Atul Kataria Chowk particularly badly affected. Waterlogging was also witnessed on NH-48 service road near Narsinghpur – a chronic black spot during monsoons.

A spokesman for the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) said the heavy rain during this time of the year was unexpected, but added that the civic body had installed pumps to drain some areas.

IMD forecasts show that Delhi is likely to record a maximum of around 26 degrees Celsius on Monday, while the minimum will hover around 16 degrees.

A Met department official said the capital may witness drizzle to very light rain on Tuesday as well, but peak rain activity during this western disturbance is expected on Monday.

“We will see cloudy skies on Tuesday but the impact of the Western Disturbance will begin to diminish and no rain is expected on Wednesday or Thursday,” the official said.

On the air quality front, pollution levels in Delhi remained in the moderate range, showing a slight improvement from Saturday’s air quality index (AQI) of 188 to 184 on Sunday, based on the Central Pollution Control Board’s national bulletin. Forecasts show that the AQI is likely to remain moderate for the next two days due to rain and strong winds.
