In a groundbreaking achievement, researchers have harnessed the power of the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to explore disturbances in Earth’s ionosphere, a domain traditionally observed using satellites. This pioneering research marks a significant leap in our understanding of the ionosphere’s behavior, offering potential benefits for GPS services, radio astronomy, and beyond.

Studying the Ionosphere with Radio Telescopes

The ionosphere, a region of Earth’s upper atmosphere, plays a crucial role in enabling global positioning, navigation, and timing services—familiarly known as GPS. This region is known for its dynamic nature, influenced by various factors, including solar activity and geomagnetic storms. Understanding the ionosphere’s behavior is vital for improving the accuracy and reliability of GPS services that millions rely on daily.

Sarvesh Mangla of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, serving as the lead author, and his mentor Prof. Abhirup Datta of IIT-Indore, embarked on a pioneering endeavor to study the ionosphere. Using GMRT, a powerful radio telescope, the researchers detected various ionospheric disturbances, both medium-scale and small-scale, offering novel insights into this vital region.

The GMRT, located in the low-latitude region, is renowned for its exceptional sensitivity and effectiveness in studying ionospheric phenomena. In their study, the researchers leveraged the GMRT’s capabilities to detect and characterize traveling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). These disturbances encompass medium-scale TIDs ranging from 100 to 300 kilometers and smaller-scale TIDs of approximately 10 kilometers, all observed at the frequencies of 235 MHz and 610 MHz.

Challenging the Norm

One of the most notable aspects of this research is that it was conducted in a low-latitude environment, closer to Earth’s magnetic equator. While previous studies primarily focused on mid-latitude and high-latitude regions, this study demonstrates the value of a low-latitude instrument for detecting changes in electron density in the ionosphere.

Benefits for Navigation and Communication

The findings of this study hold immense promise. They provide valuable insights that can enhance our knowledge and models of the ionosphere, leading to more advanced technologies and more precise measurements for navigation and communication systems. Yashwant Gupta, the Centre Director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, praised the achievements of the research team, stating, “This kind of result is something we had all along believed to be possible with the GMRT, and I am very pleased this team led by colleagues from IIT Indore has clearly demonstrated this, thereby opening a new window of research with the GMRT.”
