India Introduces Star Labeling for Solar Panels and Promotes Quality and Efficiency

The Indian government has launched a Standards & Labeling Program for solar panels aimed at helping consumers make informed choices while purchasing and deploying solar photovoltaic modules, also known as solar panels. This program, initiated on October 20, 2023, will encourage the use of high-quality and energy-efficient solar panels.
Key Highlights of the Program:
•The program includes a star labeling scheme designed by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). It will be in effect from January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, during which there will be no labelling fee.
•The program enables consumers to identify more efficient solar panels, thus reducing their reliance on installers and vendors for information. This empowers consumers to make well-informed choices when installing solar panels.
•Star labeling solar panels will contribute to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30 million tonnes annually by 2030. This aligns with India’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate goals.
•The program is voluntary for the first two years, encouraging solar panel manufacturers to participate voluntarily. However, the government may make it compulsory if the industry doesn’t readily embrace it.
•The government is committed to ensuring that solar panels are “Made in India” and of the highest quality. Over time, the policy will evolve to include PV cells and wafers, making solar panels 100% “Made in India.”
•The Star Labelling Program differentiates among various models of solar panels that may appear similar to consumers. This will help consumers select the best solar panels for their needs.
•As India aims to expand the adoption of solar rooftops, the program encourages ordinary consumers to play a significant role in achieving this growth. Solar rooftops contribute to the expansion of renewable energy sources.
•India plans to add another 200 GW of solar panels by 2030. This reflects the country’s commitment to addressing climate change and its ambitious approach to energy sustainability.
This initiative emphasizes the importance of promoting high-quality, energy-efficient solar panels and aims to enhance transparency and consumer choice in the solar energy sector. By encouraging the growth of solar panels, it supports India’s energy goals and contributes to a greener and more sustainable future.
