FBI Opens Criminal Probe into Baltimore Bridge Collapse, Fourth Victim Recovered

The aftermath of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore continues to unfold as the FBI announced a criminal investigation into the incident. Following the tragic collapse on March 26, which claimed the lives of six workers, the recovery efforts persist amid ongoing scrutiny into the circumstances surrounding the catastrophe.

The FBI confirmed its involvement in the investigation, stating that it has initiated a criminal probe into the bridge collapse. Agents boarded the cargo ship Dali to conduct court-authorized law enforcement activities related to the crash. However, the bureau refrained from disclosing further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Meanwhile, local authorities confirmed the recovery of a fourth victim on Monday. Divers, combing through the wreckage, discovered the body inside a missing construction vehicle submerged in the Patapsco River. The victim’s identity remains undisclosed at the family’s request.

The collapse occurred when a massive container ship, the Dali, lost power and collided with a support pylon of the Key Bridge, leading to the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage. As investigations unfold, questions arise regarding the vessel’s condition and whether the crew was aware of any potential issues before departure.

Safety investigators have recovered crucial data from the ship’s “black box” recorder, providing valuable insights into its operations leading up to the collision. Additionally, the city of Baltimore has taken legal action, hiring law firms to explore potential litigation against the ship’s owner, charterer, and operator.

The vessel involved, registered under Grace Ocean Pte Ltd and managed by Synergy Marine Group, has faced scrutiny in the past. An incident in the port of Antwerp in 2016 and deficiencies noted during an inspection in Chile in 2023 have raised concerns about its operational integrity.

Amid the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings, efforts to clear the wreckage and restore traffic through the Baltimore port’s shipping channel persist. While replacing the bridge is expected to be a lengthy endeavor, authorities have implemented temporary measures to mitigate disruptions to maritime activities.

As the investigation delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding the bridge collapse, authorities remain committed to ensuring accountability and preventing such tragedies in the future.
