Japan reaches milestone with successful sea test of electromagnetic rail gun

In a major technological achievement, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has conducted the world’s first documented naval test of its medium caliber naval electromagnetic Rail gun. The acquisition was announced by the Acquisition Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA), a branch of the Japanese Ministry of Defense, on 17 October 2023.
While the exact date and vessel used in the test remain undisclosed, a video posted by ATLA provides a glimpse of the railgun in action. The electromagnetic railgun was demonstrated to fire 40mm steel projectiles, each weighing 320g, using an electromagnetic propulsion system. It demonstrated its ability to accelerate missiles to hypersonic speeds reaching approximately 2,230 m/s (Mach 6.5). Currently, the weapon uses a charge energy of five megajoules (MJ), with plans to upgrade to 20 MJ for increased performance.
This medium-caliber electromagnetic rail gun demonstrates impressive capabilities, making it a valuable asset to combat a variety of aerial threats at sea, including hypersonic cruises and potentially hypersonic ballistic missiles. ATLA has also expressed interest in using ground-based railgun systems to target hypersonic missiles.
The deployment platforms for these advanced railguns have not been officially confirmed. However, indications are that Japan may potentially fit them on some of its Maritime Self-Defense Destroyers, given the vessels’ better power-generating capabilities. In addition, Japan’s multi-role missile defense vessels under development may serve as potential hosts for this transformative railgun technology.
The road to realizing a functional marine railgun system is fraught with challenges, as these high-velocity weapons must withstand corrosive saltwater, constant shocks, extreme temperature fluctuations, and other factors of the marine environment. Despite the progress made, there are still significant hurdles to overcome to establish a fully operational naval railgun system.
Japan’s pursuit of railgun technology is a direct response to emerging threats in the Indo-Pacific region. North Korea’s growing missile capabilities, including hypersonic weapons, pose a significant danger to Japan. The nation has previously faced missile threats from North Korea, and its government has pledged to intercept and destroy all missiles entering its airspace. In addition, Japan faces problems in the East China Sea, where territorial disputes such as claims to the Senkaku Islands create a potential flashpoint for conflict. China’s evolving anti-ship missile arsenal, exemplified by the DF-100 cruise missile, poses a significant threat in the disputed region.
Japan’s commitment to the development of electromagnetic railgun technology is noteworthy, especially considering the US military’s decision to halt its own railgun development programs in 2022. Collaboration between ATLA and US suppliers can potentially reignite US interest in railgun development.
Japan is not the only country actively developing railgun technology. France, for example, unveiled an electromagnetic gun project for naval ships in July 2023, while China made significant progress in developing a prototype large-caliber rail gun. In addition, the European Defense Agency hosted a project called PILUM, focused on the disruptive electromagnetic railgun concept, which shows global interest and competition in this area of ​​advanced weapons.
The successful naval test of Japan’s electromagnetic railgun represents a major step forward in military technology and potentially reshapes the dynamics of maritime security and defense in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
