The establishment of CNG stations is part of the development of the Municipal Gas Distribution Network (CGD) and is also carried out by entities mandated by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB). After completion of CGD 11 bidding round, there were 295 Geographical Areas (GAs) covering about 98% of the population and 88% of the total geographical area of the country spread over about 630 districts in 28 States/UTs including all cities under these GAs. falls under the CGD network.
As of September 30, 2022, 221 GAs were put into operation for the delivery of CNG. Gas supply to cities in these 221 GAs is also being done in accordance with PNGRB mandated minimum work program (MWP) targets and techno-commercial feasibility. The government is promoting alternative fuels which include Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), Green Hydrogen, Compressed Biogas (CBG), Ethanol etc. among others to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
