The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday questioned former Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik in a case related to alleged irregularities in two projects in Jammu and Kashmir during his tenure as governor in 2018-19. The questioning was conducted after Malik’s five-year tenure as the governor of Meghalaya ended on October 4.
“I got a call from the investigating agency and they took details of my observations on the case. No information regarding further questioning was given to me,” Malík said. According to the CBI, Malik was questioned two days ago and was questioned again on Saturday for more details.
The investigating agency filed two FIRs in April based on Malik’s allegations that he was offered a bribe of ₹300 crore to clean up two files when he was in the post of J&K governor. Malik made allegations of corruption in connection with the awarding of contracts for a group health insurance scheme for government employees.
According to him, one of the files related to a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader, the ideological mentor of the Bharatiya Janata Party. “I have two files for consideration. One secretary told me that if I approve them, I can get ₹150 million each. I declined the offer saying that I had brought five kurta pajamas to Kashmir and would just return with them,” Malik said on October 17, 2021 at a function in Rajasthan.
In one of its FIRs, the CBI alleged malpractices in awarding the ₹2,200 crore Kiru Hydro Electric Power Project construction contract to a private company in 2019. It also booked Anil Ambani’s Reliance General Insurance Company and Trinity Re-Insurance Brokers Limited in connection with the controversial health insurance scheme. Officials of Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt Ltd, along with others, have also been accused in the hydropower corruption case.
