The 2022 Asian Games, which were due to be held in Hangzhou in September, have been postponed to Friday due to an increase in COVID-19 cases in China, Multi-sport, the second largest sporting event after the Olympics in size.
The games were to kick off September 10-25 in the provincial capital Zhejiang, 175 kilometers southwest of Shanghai.
“The Olympic Council of Asia has announced that the 19 Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 10 to 25, 2022, will be postponed,” said a statement on the official website of the Games, first posted in China media. The development comes at a time when China is fighting a record number of daily incidents in Shanghai, which is just a short train ride from the city hosting the Hangzhou Games.
