Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has written to Home Minister Amit Shah seeking his intervention in ensuring adequate security for the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.
His letter to Amit Shah comes after the Bharat Jodo Yatra was suspended for the afternoon session on Friday following a “security lapse”, with the Congress alleging that the J and K police lifted security around its leader Rahul Gandhi due to surging crowds during a foot march in Qazigund.
“We are expecting a large gathering to join the yatra over the next two days and also a function to be held on January 30 in Srinagar. Many senior Congress leaders and leaders of other major political parties are attending the culminating event on January 30.
“I will be grateful if you could personally intervene in this matter and advise the officials concerned to provide adequate security till the culmination of the yatra and the celebrations on January 30 in Srinagar,” the Congress president said in his letter to the home minister. .
Mallikarjun Kharge said he was writing after an “unfortunate security lapse” during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. We appreciate the Jammu and Kashmir Police and welcome their statement that they will continue to provide complete security till the culmination of the journey. on the advice of security officials in charge of Rahul Gandhi’s security detail, the Jatra had to be suspended.”
However, the Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha also said, “You will appreciate the fact that a large number of common people have joined and walked the Bharat Jodo Yatra every day. It is difficult for the organizers to say exactly how many people are expected during the day as it is a spontaneous gesture of common people to join the yatra. The Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra began in Kanyakumari on September 7 and will culminate in Srinagar on January 30 after traversing 12 states.
The 3,500km march aims to galvanize Congress cadres across the country, but the party says the Yatra is not political and seeks to unite India in the wake of growing “hate”.
