After making her digital debut with the critically acclaimed show Aarya, Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen is all set to step into the shoes of transgender activist Gauri Sawant for her upcoming web series. On Thursday, the former Miss Universe took to Instagram and revealed her first look. The biographical drama series titled Taali is created by Arjun Singh Baran and Kartk D Nishandar. Sushmita captioned the post as, “Taali – बजायोंगी नहीं, बजवायोंगी ! #firstlook as #ShreegauriSawant to the life to the life and more than me porting have this!! to everyone’s right to live it with dignity!! I love you guys!!! #duggadugga. “
In the photo, the 46-year-old actor is seen as Sawant striking a wild and daring pose for the camera. Sushmitin’s never seen avatar has left an impression on her fans and followers. Her daughter Renee showered her mother with love in the comments section, writing: “Maa so proud of you. Dugga Dugga I love you the most.” Charu Asopa wrote, “Wow… First look is amazing.. proud of you didi. looking forward…love you didi.” Sen said the series will chronicle the “story of struggle, resilience and indomitable power” of a transgender activist.
“Nothing makes me more proud and grateful than to have embarked on this challenging journey just to witness a revolution! This one is special for so many reasons and I’m really excited to partner with Viacom18 for this one. This is just the beginning, stay tuned for what’s to come,” the former Miss Universe said in a statement. Sawant, who was born Ganesh and grew up in Pune, was one of the petitioners of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) petition filed in 2013 in which the Supreme Court recognized transgender as a third gender with a final verdict in 2014.
Taali sheds light on the remarkable life of Sawant – from her childhood, transition to her contribution to revolutionizing the transgender movement in India. The series is directed by national award winning filmmaker Ravi Jadhav and produced by Arjun Singgh Baran, Kartk D Nishandar and Afeefa Nadiadwala.
