New Delhi, January 20, 2024 The Union Minister for Textiles, Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Shri Piyush Goyal, chaired the 8th Meeting of the Mission Steering Group (MSG) of the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) today, highlighting the necessity for increased collaboration between the government and industry to boost the indigenous development of technical textiles products.
During the meeting, the Ministry of Textiles approved 11 project proposals, with a total value of approximately INR 103 crores. These include nine research and development (R&D) projects, one machine development project, and one equipment development project. Notably, one of the projects aims to develop high-strength carbon fiber for strategic applications, contributing to India’s self-reliance in the field of technical textiles.
The approved projects span various application areas of technical textiles, encompassing Protech, Meditech, Mobiltech, Buildtech, Smart Textiles, and Sustainable Textiles. Leading institutes and research bodies such as CSIR-NAL, ATIRA, NITRA, IIT Delhi, ICT-Mumbai, NIT-Jalandhar, and Colorjet India Ltd. will be spearheading these research projects.
Shri Piyush Goyal reviewed the progress of different components of the National Technical Textiles Mission during the meeting. This included an assessment of sanctioned R&D projects, the status of applications under General Guidelines for Enabling of Academic Institutes in Technical Textiles Education in India (Round – II), the implementation of Quality Control Orders issued by the Ministry of Textiles, patent guidelines for R&D, outreach activities, and events under NTTM, among other aspects.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Textiles, Smt. Darshana Jardosh, and senior officials from various ministries, including Commerce and Industry, Road Transport and Highways, Heavy Industries, Railways, Jal Shakti, Expenditure, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Science & Technology, Higher Education, Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, as well as representatives from the industry. The emphasis on indigenous development underscores India’s commitment to advancing its capabilities in the technical textiles sector.
