Security forces have initiated a large-scale search operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district following a terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in the Gundha Khawas area early Monday morning. The alert forces successfully thwarted the attack, leading to an ongoing gun-battle.
“A major terror attack on an Army picket in a remote village of Rajouri has been thwarted,” stated Defence Spokesperson Lt Col Suneel Bartwal. He confirmed that firing is ongoing and the operation is still in progress. Reports indicate that one soldier may have been injured, although officials have yet to confirm this.
Initial Attack on VDC Member’s House
The terrorists initially targeted the house of Village Defence Guard (VDC) member Parshottam Kumar in Gundha, Rajouri, at 3:10 am. Kumar was recently honoured with the Shaurya Chakra by President Droupadi Murmu. The attack injured his uncle, Vijay Kumar, and resulted in the death of a cattle. A nearby Army unit responded, leading to the firefight that is still underway.
The White Knight Corps posted on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) that operations are ongoing. This incident comes shortly after Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reviewed the prevailing security situation at a joint security review meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Police, paramilitary forces, and intelligence agencies at the police headquarters on Saturday.
Recent Incidents and Security Concerns
The attack on the Army camp follows a recent similar incident where two Army personnel were injured in a gunfight with terrorists in Doda district on Thursday. In Jaddan Bata village, around 2 am, terrorists fired on a temporary camp at a government school. One critically injured soldier was evacuated to the Udhampur command hospital by helicopter.
In another incident, security forces at a forward post near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district opened fire after spotting suspicious movement late Wednesday night. However, a search the following morning found no evidence related to the suspicious activity.
Since the beginning of the year, 27 people, including 11 security personnel, a village defence guard, and five terrorists, have been killed in nearly a dozen terror attacks across six districts of Jammu.
Recently, four army personnel, including an officer, succumbed to injuries sustained in a gunfight with heavily armed terrorists in Doda district on Tuesday. This incident followed a terrorist ambush in Kathua district’s Machedi forest belt a week ago, which resulted in the deaths of five soldiers and injuries to five others.
These attacks underscore the ongoing security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir. As operations continue, security forces remain vigilant to prevent further terrorist activities and protect the region’s stability.
