INSV Tarini Returns Triumphant After Historic Transoceanic Expedition

The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini has made a triumphant return to her base port at Goa on 21st April 2024 after a historic transoceanic expedition spanning nearly two months.

This exceptional journey, undertaken in double-handed mode by Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A, marks a significant milestone as they become the first women officers from India to achieve such a feat.

Flagged off from Goa on 28th February 2024 by renowned circumnavigator and mentor Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd), the expedition navigated through the unpredictable elements of the Indian Ocean for 22 days before arriving at Port Louis, Mauritius, on 21st March 2024.

This historic moment was commemorated with various events, including interactions with officials from the Mauritius Coast Guard and the Indian High Commission, as well as joint training sorties with the Mauritius Coast Guard personnel, fostering bilateral ties and goodwill between the two maritime nations.

Despite facing continuous challenges posed by heavy winds, adverse sea states, and rough seas, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A demonstrated indomitable spirit and steadfast resolve, guiding INSV Tarini safely back to Goa on 21st April 2024.

Their accomplishments highlight the Indian Navy’s commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women in the maritime domain. Their exceptional seamanship and resilience exemplify the spirit of adventure and exploration.

Preparations are now underway for their next monumental voyage, a circumnavigation of the globe (Sagar Parikrama – IV expedition) on INSV Tarini scheduled to commence in September this year.

This remarkable achievement serves as inspiration and sets a precedent for future generations, especially women, in the Indian Navy, encouraging them to volunteer for challenging maritime adventure activities.

INSV Tarini was warmly received at the boat pool of INS Mandovi by Commanding Officer INS Mandovi and Naval Station Commander North Goa, in the presence of naval personnel and families of Station Mandovi, symbolizing the collective achievement and camaraderie within the Indian Navy.
