India’s Sugar Exports has seen a staggering 291% growth from USD 1,177 million by FY 2013-14 to USD 4600 million by FY 2021-22. According to DGCI & S data, India exported sugar to 121 countries worldwide. Growth was achieved despite the operational challenges posed by the COVID19 epidemic in the form of high levels of cargo, shortage of boxes, etc.
Historic achievements
Highlighting the milestone in the tweet, Minister of Trade and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Distribution and Fabric, Shri PiyushGoyal said Modi government policies help farmers grow their income by affecting global markets.
According to DGCI & S data, India had exported USD 1965 million in 2019-20, which increased to USD 2790 million by 2020-21 and USD 4600 million by 2021-22.
The data showed India exports
• In 2021-22 (April-February), India exported USD 769 million to Indonesia, followed by Bangladesh (USD 561 million), Sudan (USD 530 million) and the U.A.E (USD 270 million). India also exports sugar to Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Nepal, China, etc. Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, New Zealand, Denmark, Israel, Russia, Egypt, etc.
• Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka account for about 80 percent of the country’s total sugar production. Other major sugarcane producing regions are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana, and Punjab.
India becomes the second largest sugar producer in the world
Significantly, India is the second largest sugar producer in the world after Brazil. From 2010-11, India has been producing residual sugar, which well surpasses domestic demand. Export record will enable sugar producers to reduce their shares and will also benefit sugarcane growers, as increasing demand for Indian sugar is likely to improve their productivity. The significant increase in agricultural exports is also seen as evidence of the government’s commitment to increase the income of farmers by improving the export of agricultural products and processed foods.
APEDA quality certificate
• To ensure the quality assurance of export products, APEDA has identified 220 labs across India to provide testing services for a variety of products and exporters.
• APEDA organizes the participation of exporters in international trade fairs, providing a platform for exporters to market their food products in international markets. APEDA also organizes national events such as AAHAR, Organic World Congress, BioFach India etc. to improve agricultural marketing.
In 2019, APEDA led a delegation from Indonesia to organize road shows and hold meetings with the relevant authorities. After that, the export to Indonesia was taken and today they are the largest buyers of sugar from India. Even after the export of the record, stocks closing at the end of the 2021-22 sugar season (October – September) will be at a comfortable level of 73 lakh. The government will continue to take all possible steps to curb the growing practice of exporting sugar.
