Sonia Gandhi fires five state chiefs after election fiasco

All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, Sonia Gandhi, on Tuesday fired the chiefs of five states after the catastrophic failure in the recently concluded assembly elections.

As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is being speculated to win decisively the upcoming national elections in 2024, it looks as if the Grand Old Party is making efforts to transform itself to match up to its main adversary, the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) chief Sonia Gandhi asked the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chiefs, Navjot Singh Sidhu in Punjab, Ganesh Godiyal in Uttarakhand, Ajay Kumar Lallu in UP, Girish Chodankar in Goa and Nameirakpam Loken Singh in Manipur to resign.

Later on, Supriya Shrinate, the party spokesperson said that the presidents of all five states had resigned, accepting moral responsibility for the loss in the assembly election 2022. Randeep Surjewala, the AICC media chief tweeted Sonia Gandhi’s sacking orders.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nearly decimated Congress in the last two general elections of 2014 and 2019.

Currently, Congress is in power in just three states in the entire stretch country. In Punjab it lost the power to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is headed by Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister and is just a decade-old party.

On Sunday, the party’s top leadership met to scrutinize the reasons that led to the loss. It was reported that in her speech during the meeting, Sonia Gandhi offered to resign along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. But the proposal was unanimously rejected by the leaders.

After about a four-and-a-half hour discussions, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) said that Sonia Gandhi would continue to remain the party president and has been authorised to take immediate and effective steps so as to address the organisational issues in the party.

Later on, Congress released a statement saying that it undisputedly reaffirms its faith in the able leadership of Sonia Gandhi and requests the Congress president to lead from the front, address the organisational weaknesses, effect necessary and comprehensive organisational changes in order to take on the political challenges.

The Congress G-23, or the group of 23 leaders who had written to Sonia Gandhi calling for comprehensive organisational changes, have been critical of the Gandhis’ leadership and have openly called, time and again, for a complete overhaul of the party structure.
