Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal emerged from Tihar Jail on interim bail after a 40-day stint in judicial custody. His release, facilitated by the Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail until June 1, marked a significant development in the political landscape of the capital.
Expressing gratitude to Lord Hanuman for his freedom, Kejriwal wasted no time in announcing his return to the political arena. Today, he plans to kickstart his Lok Sabha campaign with a roadshow in South Delhi’s Mehrauli, marking his first public appearance since his imprisonment.
However, the Supreme Court’s directives impose certain limitations on Kejriwal’s activities. He is barred from visiting his office or the Delhi Secretariat, with authorization to sign only those files requiring the Lieutenant Governor’s approval.
Kejriwal’s legal battles continue as he faces charges linked to a money laundering probe related to the Delhi liquor policy case. The court has instructed him to surrender on June 2, a day following the final phase of the Lok Sabha elections.
His release was met with cheers from supporters and party members, who hailed it as a victory for democracy. However, opponents, like Union Minister Amit Shah, reminded of the allegations against Kejriwal, suggesting they would shadow him during the campaign.
Amidst the political fervor, Kejriwal’s family celebrated his return, with his wife, Sunita Kejriwal, attributing it to the prayers and blessings of millions. The Supreme Court’s decision to grant bail, albeit with conditions, underscores the legal process’s commitment to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
