Bihar Bids Farewell to “Bihar Kokila” Sharda Sinha with Full State Honours

Renowned folk singer Sharda Sinha affectionately known as the “Bihar Kokila,” will be laid to rest today with full state honours. Bihar’s Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced this tribute to the celebrated singer, a Padma Bhushan awardee, who passed away on Tuesday evening at AIIMS Delhi due to refractory shock from septicaemia.

Sharda Sinha, whose soulful voice brought Bihar’s folk music to national prominence, had been battling multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, since 2018. She was receiving treatment in AIIMS Delhi’s oncology department.

Her son, Anshuman Sinha, shared a heartfelt statement, revealing that the family chose to perform her last rites in Patna at the same place where her husband’s were held. Reflecting on his mother’s legacy, he said, “She was very close to all of us, and it was a shock for everyone who knew her. My mother’s presence was always felt through her songs, and her motherhood was reflected in both her music and her personality. She will always remain in the hearts of the people.”

Today, as Bihar mourns the loss of a cultural icon, her music will continue to echo in the hearts of many who cherished her timeless folk melodies.
