Review of Shaitan: A Fiery Cocktail of Suspense, Sinister Secrets, and Madhavan’s Menace

Imagine an uninvited guest, lurking in the shadows of a remote farmhouse nestled in the serene hills. Sounds unnerving, doesn’t it? Well, add to that the twist of this mysterious interloper being a “vashikaran” specialist, delving into realms beyond the grasp of science. Welcome to the unsettling world of “Shaitan,” where darkness intertwines with diabolical intent.

R. Madhavan, known for his penchant for mischief-monger characters, delves deep into the psyche of this unhinged intruder. His portrayal adds layers of complexity to the narrative, as he insinuates himself into the family dynamics with sinister motives lurking beneath the surface.

However, amidst the tension and terror, the reliance on brutality and the exploitation of young women’s vulnerability feels both tiresome and distasteful. The film’s penchant for graphic violence and its unsettling gaze on the female protagonist detract from its narrative impact.

Yet, “Shaitan” is not without its moments of genuine terror. Jump scares punctuate the tension, leaving viewers on edge as the sinister plot unfolds. However, the climax, while predictable, fails to deliver the desired impact, marred by stretched sequences and dated Bollywood-style mumbo-jumbo.

In terms of performances, Jyotika shines as the restrained yet convincing mother, while Ajay Devgn delivers a solid performance as the protective patriarch. As for R. Madhavan, he sinks his teeth into the role of the enigmatic antagonist, balancing humor with cold menace.

Overall, “Shaitan” is a mixed bag, relying heavily on shock value to drive its narrative forward. While it may appeal to those seeking a raucous hostage drama, it falls short of delivering a truly unsettling experience.
