The SDPI issued a statement saying the ban was part of the BJP’s “undeclared emergency”

The Social Democratic Party of India, the political wing of the Popular Front of India, which was banned in India on Wednesday, said the move was a direct blow to democracy and people’s rights. SDPI National President MK Faizy said the 5-year ban is part of the undeclared emergency that is clearly visible in the country.

“Anyone who spoke out against the wrong and anti-people policies of the BJP regime faced threats of arrest and raids by them. Freedom of speech, protest and organization were ruthlessly suppressed by the regime against the basic principles of the Indian constitution. The regime is misusing investigative agencies and laws to silence the opposition and scare people from voicing dissent,” the statement said.

Here are the latest updates on the PFI ban:

7. The ban comes after two rounds of massive countrywide raids on PFI and SDPI leaders.

8. In the government order banning PFI, the government said that PFI has clear links to terror. Some of the founding members of PFI are leaders of SIMI and Jamat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.

9. There have been many instances of PFI being linked to global terrorist groups and some PFI activists have joined ISIS and engaged in terrorist activities in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, the government said.
