In a recent IPL 2024 showdown between the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), captains KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad faced the ire of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their teams’ sluggish over rates. Despite their individual performances on the field, both players were handed hefty fines by the cricketing body.
The match, held at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, saw LSG emerging victorious with a comprehensive 8-wicket win over CSK. However, the joy of victory was dampened by the BCCI’s disciplinary action against the team captains.
KL Rahul, leading the charge for LSG, was slapped with a fine of INR 12 lakh after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during the match. Despite Rahul’s stellar batting performance, where he scored 82 runs off 53 balls and clinched the Player of the Match award, the slow over rate offense couldn’t be overlooked.
On the other hand, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad faced a similar fate, bearing the brunt of the BCCI’s penalty for his team’s sluggish over rate. Gaikwad, who has recently been batting at No.3 after a series of average performances at the top order, received a fine of INR 12 lakh for the slow over rate offense during the same match.
While LSG’s victory solidified their position in the IPL 2024 points table, the match resulted in a four-way tie among LSG, CSK, KKR, and SRH, each with 8 points to their name. With the competition heating up as teams vie for a spot in the playoffs, the consequences of slow over rates serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining pace on the cricketing field.
